Wednesday to be milestone for Block22

Pittsburg State students currently living in the residence halls will spend Feb. 14 focusing on finding their perfect match.

But this isn’t about Valentine’s Day.

In yet another historic moment at Pitt State, residence hall students who have signed up to live at Block22 this fall will have the chance this week to choose which rooms they’ll call home. Representatives from University Housing will be in the Heartland Room of the Overman Student Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to help students pick out their Block22 apartment.

Block22, which is scheduled to open in August, is a unique living-learning community in Downtown Pittsburg that features 97 apartment-style rooms for Pitt State students. Students who currently live in PSU residence halls could begin signing up to live in Block22 last week. Students not living in the residence halls will have their chance to sign up for Block22 at 10 a.m. on Feb. 19.

“Wednesday, Feb. 14 will truly be a milestone day in Pitt State’s history,” said Shawn Naccarato, PSU’s chief strategy officer. “To see, for the first time ever, students picking out their rooms inside these four historic buildings downtown will be an emotional moment, as it’s the next major step toward fulfilling this dream of taking Pitt State back to its roots in the downtown district.”

Students living at Block22 will have their choice of four distinct room layouts: suites, flats, lofts and studios. All but two of the rooms are single-resident units.  There are two two-bedroom suites available.

In addition to student housing, the Block22 project at Fourth and Broadway also will include offices for University Strategic Initiatives, Enterprise PSU, a makerspace (a collaborative community workspace designed for creativity and prototyping), business incubator, co-working area, various commercial spaces and a multi-function event and educational space.

Block22 is a joint project between Pittsburg State, the City of Pittsburg and a private developer, the Vecino Group from Springfield, Mo.
