Pitt State seeking volunteers for 2018 Baja competition

Pittsburg State University launched a new online volunteer portal this week for the 2018 Baja SAE Kansas competition coming to campus May 17-20.

Unlike past years, this year’s portal allows volunteers to self-select the areas in which they have an interest, ultimately helping organizers assign people to the tasks best suited to them.

“We’ve worked hard to add duty categories to this year’s portal,” said Baja organizer and Associate Professor of Automotive Technology Trent Lindbloom. “Some areas, such as technical judging, do have requirements, but most are open to anyone who’d like to volunteer.”

This year’s event will mark the fourth time since 2011 that PSU has hosted the competition, which attracts teams from throughout the world. With 100 teams registered, and nearly 1,500 competitors and advisors expected, volunteers are more important than ever.

“The competition itself is a four-day event, but it actually takes six days of on-site work to make the event a success,” said Lindbloom. “Volunteers are critical. We’ll need help with food, hospitality, set-up, water and ice distribution, parking attendants, trash removal, registration; the list goes on and on. Thankfully, our community always steps forward to make certain our competitors enjoy their time in Pittsburg.”

PSU isn’t just hosting this year’s event — it’s also competing. The Pitt State Baja crew, which has been working on a car for nearly a year, is raising funds to help complete that car in time for the May competition.

“Every team is required to construct its car from scratch,” said Lindbloom. “It costs about $16,000 to build a car that’s competitive. Our students have started an online fundraising campaign to give folks an easy way to support their car. You give as much or as little as you like. It’s another way to help out our students."
