Block22 apartments 80 percent full in less than two weeks

But Feb. 14 wasn’t a normal day.

Pearson and nearly 65 fellow Gorillas were up and in line early to pick out their rooms at Block22, a unique living-learning community in downtown Pittsburg that will feature apartment-style living for Pittsburg State students.

“I think Block22 is going to be great for the city,” said Pearson, a graphic communication major and the first Pittsburg State student to sign a Block22 contract. “The location is amazing, and I love that they’re preserving the historical aspects of the buildings. I think this is really going to liven up the downtown area.”

More than 80 students have signed up to live at Block22, which features 97 apartments within four historic buildings at Fourth and Broadway. Pittsburg State officials said they expect the remaining rooms to fill up soon.

“Our advice to students who hope to live at Block22: sign up fast,” said Pittsburg State Chief Strategy Officer Shawn Naccarato. “We are so thrilled to see the excitement and early success of this project. We’ve always believed that Block22 would be an attractive housing option for students, but I’m not sure that even we thought we’d be 80 percent full in less than two weeks.”

Students who have already signed up to live at Block22 said one of the main draws is the opportunity to live downtown.

“One of my life goals is to live downtown in a big city, urban area,” said Joshua Hill, a marketing major. “To have the opportunity to do that now while going to Pitt State is really cool. I like the modern feel of the Block22 apartments. They’re different than normal residence hall rooms, and I really dig that.”

Each Block22 apartment comes fully furnished and features a full kitchen with all appliances, a washer/dryer combo and a private bathroom. The price to live at Block22 ranges from $525 to $650, and that includes all utilities and high-speed Internet.

Students who live at Block22 also will have access to Block22-specific parking and a shuttle bus that runs from downtown Pittsburg to campus.
