Students donate hair to support American Cancer Society

“If we had at least eight hair donations, we could make one wig to support a cancer patient,” said Huffaker, a nursing major.

They got that and then some.

More than 80 donations were contributed during the hair drive on Feb. 4. That’s enough to make 10 wigs.

“That’s just incredible,” said Huffaker, who donated 11 inches of her own hair. “The response from the campus and the community was fantastic, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

Huffaker is the Breakthrough to Nursing Program Leader in the Pittsburg State chapter of the Kansas Association of Nursing Students (KANS), the organization that conducted the donation drive.

Professionals from various local salons donated their time to cut the hair, including Stacey Johnson, Janet Mayhew, Jon Kreissler and Deonna Whitworth. Johnson is a stylist from Wild Side Salon, a local salon that partnered with KANS for the donation drive.

Those who still want to donate hair or give a financial contribution can do so by visiting the main office in McPherson Hall, the home of the Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing, until 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 10.

Hair donations, which support the American Cancer Society, must be at least eight inches in length.
