Pianist Jason Farnham performs Jan. 28 at PSU

Pianist and composer Jason Farnham will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, in Pittsburg State University’s Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

Critics have described Farnham as a mixture of Jerry Lee Lewis, Victor Borge and Beethoven on steroids. Fans have dubbed the young performer “Schroeder,” because of his toy piano and comedy antics, reminiscent of the “Peanuts” comic strip.

Originally from Ohio, Farnham began playing piano at the age of four. In high school and during his college years at Ohio University, Farnham began crafting his own style of music. That style spans a variety of genres that includes contemporary romantic piano, jazz, bossa nova, blues, stride piano, and classical with a modern twist.

Farnham says he is always looking for an interesting spin on the status quo and ways to take a classic piece and turn it on its ear. Hence, Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” takes on a techno-rock beat in “Fur Crying Out Loud Elise, Let’s Dance!” And Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Rondo Alla Turca” becomes “Rondo Alla Techno.”

Farnham’s interaction with the audience is as distinctive as his musical style. So somewhere during the concert, expect Farnham to play the piano upside down or trade in the concert grand for a toy piano.

In addition to his concert performances, Farnham is also a diverse composer, producer and songwriter who has more than six albums to his credit. His work has been used in numerous feature films and commercials. Farnham also provides background music for Harpo Productions, and one of his tracks was selected as the theme song for the 2009-10 season of “The Dr. Oz Show.” His score for the short comedy film, “You Are What You Eat,” earned him a Platinum Remi Award at the 2011 Houston International Film Festival.

Tickets for Farnham’s PSU performance range from $23-$30, with discounts available for PSU students, faculty and staff. Tickets are available at the PSU Ticket Office, 1701 S. Homer Street, 620-235-4796, www.pittstate.edu/tickets.
